Playwright Talia Pura discusses Demons of the Mind

Tuesday • April 9, 2019 • 6-7 p.m.
Warehouse 21 • 1614 Paseo De Peralta • Santa Fe

Demons of the Mind is a complex psychological drama, exploring the tortured realms of a mind caught in postpartum psychosis. The main character’s state of mind, entangled by the demands of her fundamentalist religious upbringing and love for her children, is portrayed metaphorically via aerial dance on silks and hoop. Talia will be sharing what it was like to write and embody this character, as well as the challenges involved in the extremely demanding physicality of integrating aerial dance into the performance.

Performances of Demons of he Mind run from 11 April to 5 May 2019 at Warehouse 21.

Doors open for the Talk at 5:30 pm for light refreshments and conversation before the talk.

Marjorie Prime: Remembering the Past and Designing the Future

Tuesday • April 23, 2019 • 6-7 p.m.
Santa Fe Playhouse • 142 East De Vargas Street • Santa Fe

This powerful, 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning story is about aging, memory, and artificial intelligence. Set in the not too distant future, Marjorie is starting to lose her memories to dementia. Her daughter and son in law employ the assistance of an A.I. program to help her cope and keep her out of a home. In this richly spare new play, Jordan Harrison explores the mysteries of human identity and the limits — if any — of what technology can replace.

Marjorie Prime takes place in the near future, about 30 years from now. The design team has been tasked with the challenge of creating a science fiction world that is very close to our own, but with an even greater reliance on technology. They have imagined what logical extensions of current technology have come to pass, as well as what retro styles from our time have come back around. Join director Duchess Dale, lighting designer Annie Liu, sound designer Miles Blitch, and other members of the team for a fascinating discussion about how to create a realistic, yet futuristic reality.

Performances of Marjorie Prime run from 2 – 19 May at the Santa Fe Playhouse.

Doors open for the Talk at 5:30 pm for light refreshments and conversation before the talk.
