Molière’s The Miser

In The Miser, Harpagon, whose main concern in life is his cash, has buried a small box filled with a lot of money in his backyard. Paranoid about someone stealing the money, Harpagon spends most of the play checking on its location (if not actually moving it). With two children to marry off, Harpagon plans to marry his daughter to a wealthy old man and schemes to get his son’s girlfriend all to himself. Plots are soon hatched and treasure hunts abound in this luscious, revealing French commedia in a world premiere translation by David Carter.

First performed in 1668, the play resonates today as Harpagon, so obsessed with money, loses sight of what is really valuable in the world.
