The Happiest Song Plays Last
By Quiara Alegría Hudes
Directed by Robyn Rikoon
Santa Fe Playhouse presents The Happiest Song Plays Last by Quiara Alegría Hudes as part of a collaboration with Teatro Paraguas and Ironweed Productions to bring her three-play cycle, The Elliot Trilogy, to Santa Fe!
The Happiest Song Plays Last summary: At the dawn of the Arab Spring in an ancient Jordanian town, an Iraq War veteran struggles to overcome the traumas of combat by taking on an entirely new and unexpected career: an action-film hero. At the same time, halfway around the world in a cozy North Philadelphia kitchen, his cousin takes on a heroic new role of her own: providing hot meals and an open door for the needy.
And don't miss the opportunity to see the entire Trilogy, which also includes Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue (Teatro Paraguas) and Water by the Spoonful (Ironweed Productions). The three plays follow Elliot Ortiz from the battlegrounds of Iraq, to a Subway sandwich shop in his home of Philadelphia, to his roots in Puerto Rico, and back to the Middle East to confront a past that has haunted him since the war. The plays span four generations and over 60 years, delving into the impact of war and addiction on families and how redemption can be found within intergenerational care, compassion, and wisdom.
September 26th will begin a rolling three-week run of each play in the trilogy: Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue opens September 26, Water by the Spoonful opens October 3 and The Happiest Song Plays Last opens October 10. The weekend of October 10, all three plays will be running concurrently. Thus, audience members will have the opportunity to see the trilogy over five weekends, or, if they are visiting tourists, the opportunity to see the trilogy within the space of one weekend.
