The Revolutionists

Writer: Lauren Gunderson
Director: Lindsey Hope Pearlman
Cast: Ariana Karp (Charlotte Corday), Mary Beth Lindsey (Olympe de Gouges), Maureen Joyce McKenna (Marie Antoinette),  Danielle Reddick (Marianne Angelle)

The Adobe Rose is pleased to announce the beginning of ART Productions’ fourth season with Lauren Gunderson’s acclaimed new social commentary, The Revolutionists. Four bad-ass women muse about the meaning of life—and lose their heads—during the French Revolution in this irreverent, female-empowerment comedy set during the Reign of Terror.

While lingering in a Jacobin prison, four women—playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, deposed queen Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle—verbally joust, mull the power of storytelling, and shatter our preconceptions about the role of women in the arts, on stage, and in politics, and not just in 1793.

A quartet, a revolutionary dream fugue . . . a true story, The Revolutionists is a wildly creative work by one of America’s boldest new theatrical voices that takes us on a grand comedic and ultimately lyrical adventure.

“An astoundingly accomplished show . . . a cause for rejoice . . . ingeniously conceived and delivered.”  —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Revolutionists resembles a blindingly scintillating gem-like puzzle. . . . By turns it is drolly funny and affectingly poignant, then doubles back to satirical farce, then ends by bringing into stark relief the social commentary that it has been nurturing all night.”  —FloridaTheatreOnStage.com

Lauren Gunderson has become one of America’s most produced playwrights. She recently received her second Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award at the Humana Festival in Louisville for The Book of Will. She received the prestigious award in 2014 for her play I and You. Her searing one-woman show about domestic violence and gun control, Natural Shocks, was  performed in April at the Adobe Rose.
